Construction of realities. Goya to Picasso

Taking up to the main focus of this year’s German A level art class, this presentation of works from the Department of Prints and Drawings demonstrates different artistic strategies and perspectives and enables a technical, formal and content-related comparison.

In his animation Markus Vater deals with human primeval fears in today's reality of life. Peter Doig, Elger Esser and Gerhard Richter look at deceptive landscape idylls, Pablo Picasso and Francisco de Goya unite past and present in the brutal reality of the bullfight. In Desastres de la guerra or Disasters of War, Goya confronts the viewer with the everyday life of the people during the French occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. While Goya depicts the atrocities, the US-American artist Jenny Holzer uses original documents of the CIA in which torture by "waterboarding" was captured. She blackens the documents and allows the images to be created by the viewer's imagination.
