The Düsseldorf-based painter Pia Fries (*1955) seeks to tease new stimuli out of the paint in the course of the painterly process. She kneads, hits, shakes the paint, or pours it out. Even though some of her paintings become relief-like in terms of thickness, often prompting critics to refer to her original training as a sculptor, “flat” graphic art also plays an important part in her oeuvre. In the course of the years, different motifs and approaches have emerged.

The exhibition is the first to explore the different aspects of her work with graphic techniques and the way she handles paper in painting. The focus is on the close connection between painting and graphic art, drawing particular attention to the graphic elements inherent in painting.
