The Kunstpalast library is a reference library open to all visitors. General reference works and encyclopedia of artists offer a first insight into art history. The entire stock of some 120,000 volumes focuses on art-historical literature on the main areas covered by the museum’s collections. In addition, the library holds a large collection of national and international exhibition and auction catalogues as well as a wide selection of art periodicals. More than half of the volumes are recorded in the central catalogue of the cultural institutes of the state capital of Dusseldorf and can be researched in the internet.

Opening hours:
Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., a pre-registration is required on Fridays.

Study Room

The Collection of Prints and Drawings currently consists of some 70,000 works. For conservational reasons only a small number of the precious drawings and extensive range of print graphics can be presented for a short period at a time in the cabinets of the collections or during changing exhibitions.

In the refurbished Study room of the Collection of Prints and Drawings, interested visitors can have prints and artists’ drawings of their choice brought out for them to view. The Study room is also available to students at art academies and universities or other institutions for seminars. Separate invitations are issued for events concerning prints and drawings.

Opening hours: Tuesdays and thursdays 10 am – 5 pm

Art Councelling

The Kunstpalast offers visitors once a year an opportunity to bring in works of art for evaluation for authenticity and interest. Our museum curators offer advice regarding date, origin, material and quality in the fields of prints and drawings, paintings, applied arts, design, and glass. Advance reservation is required.

The councelling is free of charge, but it does neither include written expertises nor market valuations.

Next date: 6. March 2019

Please submit your application by email or postal mail, including meaningful images (for paintings: the front, back, and a detail of the signature) as well as information on sizes and—if available—on technique and provenance. You’ll receive a confirmation that we ask you to bring to the venue.

Parking is available on the riverside: Parkplatz „Unteres Werft“, access via Robert-Lehr-Ufer 1

Blick in den Museumsshop

Prior to, during or after your visit to the museum, you have the option to take some refreshments at our café, the KristallBar. The KristallBar is located in the heart of the exhibition wing of Museum Kunstpalast right by a spectacular installation by the Swiss artists Gerda Steiner and Jörg Lenzlinger, embodying the autonomic nervous system of the human organism. This 16 metre high construction of branches and roots, fine ropes, wires and thin plastic tubes is composed of many small objects and both artificial and real parts of plants. Here, in a relaxed atmosphere, you may enjoy a selection of hot and cold drinks as well as snacks offered by our caterer lemonpie.

Opening hours:

Tuesday until Sunday 11 am - 6 pm, Thursday 11 am – 9 pm, Monday closed

On bright days in the summer months we offer an unusual service in the Ehrenhof: Under the motto ‘dial a picnic’ you may make yourself comfortable in a deck chair and enjoy your cool fruit juice or hot coffee right by the fountain.
