Travel a hundred years back in time to the “Große Ausstellung für Gesundheitspflege, soziale Fürsorge und Leibesübungen“. The GeSoLei combined sports, hygiene, arts, welfare, and other topics; also, it included a variety of amusement possibilities. A 400.000 square meter area was especially developed for this occasion. To this day, the building complex at the Ehrenhof, comprising the Tonhalle, Rheintherasse and Kunstpalast, defines the cityscape. The biggest exhibition of the Weimar Republic attracted 7.5 million visitors between May and October 1926.
Prof. Stefanie Michels (Institut für Kulturwissenschaften/Globalgeschichte, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf) and private lecturer Dr. Silke Fehlemann (Fakultät für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte, TU Dresden) talk about the GeSoLei‘s main themes: body, health, sports, and welfare. To what extent does the mix of trade fair, amusement parc, and major sporting event reflect the zeitgeist and the idea of progress?
