In this workshop, we will create our own watercolour painting of mountain landscapes. Rough peaks, tranquil valleys and natural light invite you to capture this beautiful landscape
with quick sketches. The best part: watercolours, a brush and a sketchbook fit in any backpack! We will practice the best techniques so that you will be able to document your next hiking trip with expressive, personal artworks.

Nima Dibazar is an architect and watercolour painter who has been recording his own memories of people, places and travels in his sketchbooks. He will introduce you to painting with watercolours and show you how to work free and loose with them.

The exhibition “Women Artists. From Monjé to Münter” looks at 31 female artists who were active in Düsseldorf during 1819-1919 – a time when they were not allowed to study at the prestigious art academy. But what about women artists today? How do they work, what strategies do they pursue to be seen and what obstacles do they face? And how about the other side, the curators? In our conversation ‘Crossing Borders’, artist Hyunjin Kim and curator Riikka Thitz talk about their practice, their work and which borders they have crossed – and which they still want to cross.

This workshop is aimed at students and recent graduates working across disciplines—for example, between choreography and dance, visual arts, performance, applied arts, or music. The goal is to provide tools for artists to contextualize and position themselves within the larger field of contemporary art.
During the workshop, we will begin by exploring the key elements and various uses of a written artist statement and a visual portfolio. We will examine case studies and collaborate on refining participants’ own artist statements and portfolios.

Participants are expected to have an existing artist statement and a visual portfolio (such as a website) that they would like to develop further. You can bring your own laptop.


The workshop is led by Riikka Thitz, a Helsinki-based curator working at the intersection of performing and visual arts. Her practice investigates how performance and exhibition formats shape the forms, temporalities, and spaces in which art is presented. She is particularly interested in the frictions and dialogues that emerge when different artforms meet—architecturally, conceptually, and experientially. Grounded in site-responsive approaches, Riikka’s work emphasizes bodily experience, multisensory engagement, and the materiality of art. She incorporates dramaturgy as a tool to navigate and articulate the complex interdependencies between artworks, spaces, and audiences.
Since 2021, Riikka has worked as the part-time curator of the Stage for Contemporary Performance programme in the Helsinki City Theatre. She also co-runs the Helsinki-based multidisciplinary arts association i dolci. Riikka holds an MFA in Exhibition Studies from the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, and an MA in Euroculture from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. She has previously held roles in production, communications, and programme management, both in freelance contexts and at institutions such as the Moving in November contemporary dance festival and Kiasma Theatre in Helsinki, as well as the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux in Brussels.

In connection with the exhibitions “Women Artists! From Monjé to Münter” at the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and “Crossing Borders” at the ATENEUM Helsinki, this workshop is organised in cooperation with the Finnland-Institute.

Ilna Ewers-Wunderwald was an artist, a free spirit, and an emancipatory pioneer of her time; however, she has since been forgotten. She was born in Düsseldorf and played an active role in the art scene and visited the art association “Malkasten” often. Some of her illustrations evoke a memory of distant places and phantastical creatures. Our first stop will be the FrauenOrt NRW dedicated to her before heading to the Kunstpalast. After some artistic impressions, we will create our own illustrations.

Famous paintings, such as Rubens’ Ascension or Cranach’s Unequal Couple, meet exhibits that make many a visitor wonder: Birkenstock sandals and an Aldi bag, for example. Is that art? Of course it is!

Whether miniature or monumental work, everyday object or piece of jewellery, sculpture or porcelain, drawing or interactive VR installation – this collection unites all genres. Thanks to regular new additions and rearrangements as well as temporary interventions and special presentations such as Kunstpalast in Bloom, the permanent collection is always on the move and there is always something new to discover on the tour.

The museum’s collection is extensive, with around 130,000 objects from 11 centuries, various continents and all eras and genres. In addition to the historical holdings of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, other significant contributions to the main collection are the works from the Willi Kemp Foundation and those donated by Wolfgang Hanck.

At 27 stations in the collection, you can smell different scents from over a thousand years of art and cultural history and engage in conversation with each other.

Meeting point Museum takes place once a month.
