What role does art play in society?
Jörg Immendorff repeatedly addressed this central question, for example in his masterpiece ‘Wo stehst Du mit Deiner Kunst, Kollege?’ (What’s your stance on art, mate?). In his works, he highlighted social injustices and called for political action.
More than fifty years later, Jody Korbach takes up this imagery in her work ‘Kommst du mit Saufen, oder was?’ (Are you coming for a drink, or what?), which the Friends of the Kunstpalast acquired for the collection in 2026. Korbach leaves open the question of what has now taken the place of earlier political utopias and ideals; a possible answer lies in the ironic title.
Together with co-curator Felicity Korn, the Düsseldorf-based artist discusses Jörg Immendorff’s multi-layered body of work and his understanding of art as a space for negotiating pressing social and political issues.
