Sculptures are meant to be touched. And yet this “touching” is seldom allowed in museums, usually for reasons of conservation. In collaboration with the English sculptor Tony Cragg (*1949), the Kunstpalast presents an exhibition that focuses on the tactile appeal of his sculptures. It is the first comprehensive presentation in a museum that explicitly invites visitors to touch all the sculptures, to use their hands to trace their lines and feel their contours.

Delving into the material world and revealing its possibilities is a central focus of Tony Cragg’s work. Please touch! vividly demonstrates his fascination with the fusion of material and meaning.

Tony Cragg, who has lived in Wuppertal since 1977, is one of the most internationally renowned sculptors of his generation. His large-scale sculptures are highly recognisable; their sensual forms invite viewers to change their point of view and perspective. Tony Cragg is also very familiar with their desire and urge to touch his art.

The sculptor has long been interested in the feelings and meanings that are evoked through the use of different substances. His sculptures are characterised by a variety of forms and materials, which can be seen and – unusually – felt in this exhibition of around 30 works at the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf.
