Connaissez-vous cette femme ? Entre 1819 et 1919, 31 femmes artistes ont travaillé à Düsseldorf. À l’époque, les femmes n’étaient pas admises à étudier à la célèbre académie des beaux-arts. Certaines d’entre elles ont néanmoins acquis une certaine notoriété et une certaine renommée de leur vivant, mais elles sont tombées dans l’oubli au fil des ans. L’exposition présente leurs œuvres et élargit ainsi considérablement la compréhension de l’art du XIXe et du début du XXe siècle. There have always been women artists, but many of them have been forgotten. The exhibition presents 31 selected female artists who were active in Düsseldorf between 1819 and 1919. During this period women not admitted to the art academy. Nevertheless, some of them achieved prominence and fame during their lifetimes. Discover an important chapter of art history that has been overlooked for far too long on this guided tour. We will walk through the rooms together in a peaceful atmosphere and learn about the stories and artworks of the selected female artists. You can also share your own memories with us. We look forward to your stories and impressions and the journey together!

    Marga Klinckenberg was a multi-talented woman. She was a graphic artist and sculptor as well as a musician and writer. She attended the Düsseldorf School of Arts and Crafts and took private lessons. In the exhibition “Women Artists! From Monjé to Münter”, the museum showcases her diverse ex-libris designs. Together we seek inspiration by the artist’s graphic world before we will get creative ourselves.

    Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann was a successful artist and dynamic businesswoman. She supported her family with her art and built up a network throughout Europe. In her memoirs, she recounts her experiences and her time in Warsaw and Düsseldorf. At the beginning of the event, actress Julia Dillmann will read passages from the memoirs, accompanied by violinist Klara Gronet, before visitors can get to know Jerichau-Baumann’s artworks in the exhibition “Women Artists! From Monjé to Münter” during the subsequent guided tour.

    The event is a collaboration between the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and the Polish Institute Düsseldorf as part of Polish Freedom Weekend 2025.
