An afternoon full of inspiring encounters. This time, we will take a joint look at the history of the Kunstpalast. When were the buildings in the Ehrenhof constructed? How did the diversity of the collection come about? In this special series, the focus is not only on art-historical background, but also on shared exchange and personal impressions. In dialogue with the group, selected artworks and artists will be presented.

After the guided tour, we invite you to continue the conversations in a relaxed atmosphere over coffee and cake.
The price includes one slice of cake and a non-alcoholic beverage of your choice.

This format is aimed at people who would like to enrich their everyday lives through new encounters and who are interested in art. No prior knowledge is required.

Typical motifs in still lifes are flowers, fruits, and vessels, but also everyday objects that are artfully arranged and often have symbolic meaning. The appeal of these works of art lies above all in slowing down the gaze and rediscovering the beauty of everyday life. What do the pictures tell us about their time, about human values, and about transience? In the Kunstpalast collection, we discover works from different centuries.

In addition to the art-historical background, this special series focuses on mutual exchange and personal impressions. Sometimes all it takes is a picture to start a conversation or bring back memories. Our experienced art educators guide you through the collection exhibition and introduce individual works of art or artists in dialogue with the group.

After the tour, we cordially invite you to continue the conversation in a cozy atmosphere over coffee and cake.

The Grumpy Guide knows everything – and, above all, he knows it better than the visitors, which he is more than happy to make them feel. He is irritable, bored and arrogantly superior.
By his own account, Joseph Langelinck is a descendant of a former director of the Düsseldorf gallery of paintings. He harbours a particular resentment towards certain artists and works that would never have found their way into the collection under his rightful leadership – but above all towards the visitors and their woeful ignorance.

Langelinck worked as an art critic in Berlin, but could not endure the city for long, finding it simply far too pleasant. Back in his native Düsseldorf, he tried his hand as a Köbes in various breweries, yet the sunny dispositions of his colleagues drove him to the brink of despair. And so he ended up at the Kunstpalast, where he now unleashes his vast store of knowledge upon unsuspecting visitors as a museum guide.
He leads the group through the collection entirely as it suits him: sometimes racing through several centuries at breakneck speed, at other times lingering for minutes on the tiniest detail of a single work of art. From time to time, there may even be an unexpected quiz – so beware of the Grumpy Guide!

What is the world – and what is it made of? Is there something that connects everything? The exhibition looks at the fundamentals of nature and expands the classical theory of the four elements – earth, fire, water and air – by a higher dimension: the fifth element. Around 70 works from the Kemp Collection and the Kunstpalast Collection take on this theme and focuss on the interaction between nature, art and science.
In this guided tour for blind and visually impaired people, we will take you on a journey through the exhibition with exciting stories and tactile experiences of selected objects.
