Thanks to ERGO’s support, all visitors will be granted free admission to the exhibition “Monet – Cézanne – Matisse. The Scharf Collection” on 9 May 2026.

ERGO Day combines cultural commitment with a special historical connection to the collection on display: the roots of the Scharf Collection go back to Otto Gerstenberg, the founder of Victoria Versicherung, from which ERGO later emerged. The private collection traces its origins back to him and is now in its fourth generation. There is thus an extraordinary connection between the exhibition’s sponsor and the collection on display.

What do we see when we look at an image? And how do space and time influence our perception of reality?

Long gone are the days when photography and moving images served merely to represent reality or document moments for posterity. The artists featured in the exhibition show us that an image can be a construction, a chemical or digital process, a spatial statement or a linguistic fragment.

Under the title In Szene gesetzt (Staged), Made in Düsseldorf#8 brings together works from the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf’s art collection at the Kunstpalast that explore the tension between reality and human perception. Through photography, film, sound and sculpture, the artists probe the possibilities of representing reality. In doing so, they make the mediums themselves the subject, using a variety of strategies to reveal their potential, limitations and interpretive capacities. The artistic (de)construction of reality opens up new perspectives for us.

Works by Jan Dibbets, Simon Dybbroe Møller, Andreas Gefeller, Gudrun Kemsa, Sophie Meuresch, Steven Pippin, Barbara Probst, Amanda Ross-Ho and Juergen Staack are on display. Made in Düsseldorf is an exhibition series organised by the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf in collaboration with the Kunstpalast. It is dedicated to contemporary artists who are connected to Düsseldorf and the Rhineland through their studies, their place of residence or their artistic content.

The eighth exhibition in this series is curated by Esther Breinig.

Architecture and art at the Ehrenhof

Please note: This tour will be held in German.

Exactly a hundred years ago, on May 8th 1926, opened the “Große Ausstellung für Gesundheitspflege, soziale Fürsorge und Leibesübungen” in short GeSoLei. The Ehrenhof building complex, comprising of Tonhalle, Rheinterrasse, and Kunstpalast, was constructed especially for this exhibition. What happened since, what stayed, and what changed? Learn more about the past of this place and how the art came to be in the museum. Experience a part of Düsselsdorf’s architectural history and share your stories and memories as well.

In addition to the art-historical and architectural background, this special series focuses on mutual exchange and personal impressions. Sometimes all it takes is a building to start a conversation or bring back memories. Our experienced art educators guide you through the Ehrenhof’s history and works of art or artists in dialogue with the group. After the tour, we cordially invite you to continue the conversation in a cozy atmosphere over coffee and cake.

In this themed tour, we focus on the varieties of abstraction. Impressionist artists had already begun to simplify, dissolve, or rearrange the visible world. Forms became areas of color, contours lost their sharpness, and light and mood took center stage rather than precise detail. This created an tension between representationalism and dissolution, a transition in which modern abstraction is already laid out.
