“Your first stroke counts more than perfection” – under this motto, artist Susi Bumms invites you on a creative journey that puts the joy of experimenting front and center. With paper and pen, we explore ideas that arise both in our minds and around us. We try, experiment, and let spontaneous ideas guide us – without pressure, without right or wrong. Sketching, conceptual thinking, visual ideas: everything is allowed, everything counts.
This workshop is an invitation to explore your own creative expression, enjoy the act of making, and perhaps take home a truly personal piece. Just start, draw, create – and let yourself be surprised!
The artist, a freelance illustrator based in Cologne after studying in the arts, combines conceptual approaches with keen observation, humor, and surprising perspectives. Her work plays with design and language, depicting objects with character, situations with a twist, and people with “living fingers.”

Die Mona Lisa im Kunstpalast ist nur kopiert, sieht dem Original aber täuschend ähnlich. Für den Unterschied zwischen Kopie und Fälschung gibt es genaue Angaben. Auch im Internet kursieren viele Fakes und Fake News. Wie können wir diese erkennen, was ist daran problematisch und welche Auswirkungen haben Falschinformationen? In diesem Workshop zeigen wir Euch, wie Nachrichten als Fake News entlarvt und welche Strategien helfen, um der Wahrheit auf die Spur zu kommen.

This workshop explores the intersection of close observation and creative imagination through the medium of ballpoint pen drawing. Participants will delve into the world of animals and their visual representation – before reimagining them in unexpected ways. Using reference images from encyclopaedias and natural history books, we’ll learn how to capture texture, shadow and material through fine linework. Step by step, imaginative hybrid creatures will come to life – each combining at least three elements, such as a hedgehog with frog legs and a plush toy tail, or a shimmering snake made of metal and ice cream.
This session invites participants to take a closer look, blend observation with imagination – and bring new forms to life, one line at a time.
Leading the workshop is Takumi Ogata, a Japanese graphic designer and illustrator based in Düsseldorf. Known for his “Retro Japanese Style”, his work blends traditional influences from the Shōwa era with contemporary European perspectives. His monochrome analogue drawings and colourful digital paintings reflect a fascination with mythical animals, urban life, and everyday detail.
Beyond Lines – LAMY creative sessions at Palast Studio invites you to get creative and try out new techniques at the Kunstpalast. The workshop series is aimed at young people and adults.

From Sketch to Soul: Character Design in Comics

Diesmal wird Beyond Lines – LAMY Creative Sessions zur Bühne für eine kreative Begegnung zwischen Düsseldorf und Ontario, Kanada. Der hybrid angelegte Workshop widmet sich der Frage, wie gezeichnete Figuren durch Linie, Farbe und Storytelling zum Leben erweckt werden.
Vor Ort leitet der Düsseldorfer Comiczeichner William Ahland die Veranstaltung. William zeichnet seit seiner Kindheit Comics und ist fasziniert von dem, was in und hinter dem Medium steckt. Neben seinem Studium an der HSD gibt er regelmäßig mit viel Leidenschaft und Begeisterung Workshops und Führungen zum Thema Comics im NRW-Forum.
Digital aus Kanada zugeschaltet wird Derek Laufman, ein professioneller Comiczeichner und Illustrator mit über 25 Jahren Erfahrung. Er lebt in London, Ontario, und hat klassische Animation am renommierten Sheridan College studiert. Derek ist der kreative Kopf hinter eigenen Comicreihen wie Ruinworld, Bot-9, The Witch of Wickerson und seinem neuesten Titel Crimson Fall. Darüber hinaus arbeitet er als freier Illustrator für internationale Größen wie Marvel, DC, DreamWorks, Hasbro und Mattel.
Der Workshop findet teilweise auf Englisch statt, da Derek per Livestream direkt aus seinem Studio zugeschaltet wird. Gemeinsam mit William wird er über kreative Ansätze im Character Design sprechen und live zeigen, wie Ideen für eigene Comicfiguren – from sketch to soul – zum Leben erweckt werden.
Beyond Lines – LAMY Creative Sessions series becomes the stage for a creative encounter between Düsseldorf and Ontario, Canada. This hybrid workshop explores how illustrated characters come to life through line, color, and storytelling.
Live on site, Düsseldorf-based comic artist William Ahland will lead the session. William has been drawing comics since his youth and is fascinated by what lies behind and within the medium. Alongside his studies at HSD, he regularly leads workshops and gives comic-focused tours at the NRW-Forum, where he brings his passion to life for visitors of all ages.
Joining digitally from Canada is Derek Laufman, a professional comic artist and illustrator with over 25 years of experience. Based in London, Ontario, and trained in classical animation at Sheridan College, Derek has created original comic series such as Ruinworld, Bot-9, The Witch of Wickerson, and his newest title Crimson Fall. He also works as a freelance illustrator for major names like Marvel, DC, DreamWorks, Hasbro, and Mattel.
The workshop will be held partially in English, as Derek will join via livestream to share insights and techniques directly from his studio. Together with William, he’ll explore creative approaches to character design and demonstrate live how comic characters are brought to life—from sketch to soul.

Mit Skizzenbuch und Stift halten wir urbane Räume und prägnante Bauwerke in Zeichnungen fest.
Bei gutem Wetter arbeiten die Teilnehmenden gemeinsam mit Nima Dibazar im Innenhof des Kunstpalasts – direkt vor Ort, mitten im urbanen Raum.
Nima Dibazar ist Architekt und Stadtgestalter mit über zwanzig Jahren internationaler Erfahrung – unter anderem in London, Manchester, Dubai, Düsseldorf und seiner Heimatstadt Tabriz im Iran. Seit mehreren Jahren widmet er sich intensiv dem Urban Sketching. Für ihn ist das Zeichnen vor Ort ein Weg, die Stadt anders wahrzunehmen: als offenes Skizzenbuch voller spontaner Eindrücke, Alltagsbeobachtungen und visueller Geschichten.
