Bright colours, distorted forms, emotional expressiveness, and the wish to capture the own perception of reality: These characterize many expressionists artworks. Numerous artists associated with this movement formed groups like “The Blue Rider” or “The Bridge”. Learn more about their approaches, stories, and the art movement. Explore the colourful world of the Kunstpalast.

In addition to the art-historical background, this special series focuses on mutual exchange and personal impressions. Sometimes all it takes is an artwork to start a conversation or bring back memories. Our experienced art educators guide you through works of art or artists in dialogue with the group.

This format is aimed at people who would like to enrich their everyday lives through new encounters and who are interested in art. No prior knowledge is required.

In 1926, Düsseldorf became the venue for the exhibition on healthcare, social welfare and physical exercise –“GeSoLei“ for short , the largest exposition of the Weimar Republic. In the wake of the First World War, the event promoted the ideal of a “new, capable human being” – an image that was later co-opted and radicalised for ideological purposes during the Nazi era. Topics such as medicine, sport, social welfare, hygiene, nutrition and physical culture were the focus, complemented by a wide-ranging cultural and entertainment program.  

Around 20 artists created sculptures, mosaics, murals and glassworks. Many of these works can still be seen around the Ehrenhof. The exhibition commemorates this significant chapter in the city’s history from a century ago.

From 5 November 2026, the Kunstpalast will be focusing on fitness, exercise and feeling good about your body: inspired by the historical theme of ‘physical exercise’, the exhibition GYM – Fit with Art combines the joy of movement with that of art, inviting visitors to experience our collection with their whole bodies. Der ERGO Tag verbindet kulturelles Engagement mit einer besonderen historischen Beziehung zur ausgestellten Sammlung: Die Wurzeln der Scharf Collection reichen zurück zu Otto Gerstenberg (1848-1935), der 1873 in die damalige Victoria Versicherung in Berlin eintrat. 1888 wurde er zum Vorstand der Gesellschaft ernannt, 1901 erhielt er den Titel Generaldirektor. Aus der Victoria Versicherung ging später die ERGO hervor.
Die private Sammlung wird heute in vierter Generation fortgeführt. So besteht zwischen dem Sponsor der Ausstellung und der präsentierten Sammlung eine außergewöhnliche Verbindung.

Exactly a hundred years ago, on May 8th 1926, opened the “Große Ausstellung für Gesundheitspflege, soziale Fürsorge und Leibesübungen” in short GeSoLei. The Ehrenhof building complex, comprising of Tonhalle, Rheinterrasse, and Kunstpalast, was constructed especially for this exhibition. What happened since, what stayed, and what changed? Enjoy the Ehrenhof and capture it with your brush! This time, the workshop will take place outside. We observe the hustle and bustle, the Kunstpalast’s architecture, and the shapes and colours surrounding us. How do we sketch the scenery? Outdoor painting demands fast decisions but also offers a broad variety of details and inspiring moments. You will learn methods and techniques to capture your impressions.

Beginner or advanced, everyone is welcome!

Artist-quality materials are provided. You may bring your own easel, folding stool or another seating possibility for outside.

Nach 20 ausverkauften Terminen in ganz Deutschland ist es Anfang 2027 wieder so weit. Dirk Steffens geht mit seinem Programm „Hoffnungslos optimistisch“ wieder auf Tour. Diesmal immer an seiner Seite, seine Frau Sabine Steffens.

In über 20 Terminen in Deutschland und Schweiz erzählt Deutschlands bekanntestes Wissenschaftspaar gut gelaunt von der Zukunft. Nach mehreren Jahren und Expeditionen in mehr als 120 Länder ist Deutschlands sind die beiden überzeugt: Der Weltuntergang fällt aus. Die Menschheit hat mehr Lösungen als Probleme. Sie erklären, live auf Tour, warum es schlau ist, optimistisch zu sein und wie kackende Wale unser Klima retten. Eine aufregende, inspirierende und unterhaltsame Reise rund um die ganze Welt. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Sabine erreichen sie mit ihrem Podcast „Kettenreaktion“ ein Millionenpublikum.

Seit 2011 feiert das Rudelsingen – das in Münster geborene Kultformat zum Mitsingen – seinen Siegeszug durch ganz Deutschland. 10 Teams begeistern dabei bundesweit regelmäßig in über 100 Städten monatlich über 10.000 Rudelsängerinnen und Rudelsänger.
Beim Rudelsingen werden sie live von 2 Musiker*innen begleitet, die Texte werden per Beamer auf eine Leinwand projiziert. So wird Mitsingen zum puren Genuss! Das Repertoire ist bunt gemischt. Von Schlager bis Rock, vom aktuellen Radio-Hit bis zum Evergreen, für jede und jeden ist das Passende dabei. Gika Bäumer und Lutz Angermann singen zusammen mit dem Publikum u.a. die größten vorweihnachtlichen RUDELSINGEN Hits aus aller Welt.
