The exhibition Death and the Devil explores the artistic fascination with the gruesome. The first of its kind, the show illuminates the legacy and continuation of horror’s tropes in fashion, music, film as well as contemporary art. The 120 works on display range from classical painting and sculpture to elaborate installations.

The presentation begins with a prologue that illustrates how the history of art and culture has been marked by death and macabre images.
This spans from the fantastical demons of the Renaissance admonishing sinful behaviour, to the landscapes of Romanticism steeped in ruin and shadows, to the suspenseful figures lurking in early 20th-century horror films. As part of a “cannibalistic” genre that continually re-enacts its own symbols, characters, and themes, these historical examples serve to contextualize contemporary interpretations of the gruesome and terrifying.

In the main body of the show, the exhibition brings together works from the last two decades. The diverse adaptations of horror’s tropes attest to its importance in fashion, music, film, and art.
Presented are works by artists as diverse as Rei Kawakubo, the Chapman Brothers, Billie Eilish, Lars von Trier, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Mary Sibande, Stefan Vogel and many others. Death metal and the blood-filled sneakers of MSCHF meet contributions from Andres Serrano and Eliza Douglas. With their approaches to generating fear, disgust or discomfort, these works formulate a canonized rule-breaking that transgresses societal barriers, gets under the skin and fires the imagination.

With a total of three stations, the exhibition will be on view in large parts of Germany. The show will start at the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf (September 2023 – January 2024), continue at the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt (1 March 2024 – 2 June 2024) and end at the Museum Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt (14 July – 20 October 2024).
Curator: Westrey Page, Kunstpalast

The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive catalogue and a comprehensive program of events that will make the fascination of the subject tangible outside the museum.
The exhibition is suitable for children from 12 years of age.

MEY & EDLICH CAPSULE COLLECTION ON THE EXHIBITION
The “Death and the Devil” collection by Mey & Edlich, which was especially created for the exhibition, is characterised by deep dark tones and comprises 13 pieces in total. It is a fusion between the familiar and the novel, giving rise to unprecedented nuances in between. Some of the designs make reference to selected exhibits – such as the hoodie with a print of the white death mask of a 19th-century girl, “Resusci Anne”, which is used today as a model for reanimation dolls. Also, there is a buttoned shirt with two sides. On the back it bears Dürer’s copper engraving dating from the 16th century: Knight, Death and Devil. It is the first time in German-speaking culture that fashion explores the subject of death in some depth.
The collection will soon be offered for purchase on the Mey & Edlich website. A number of pieces are also available on-site in our museum shop during the exhibition period.

Performance With Eliza douglas
Thursday, 14.9.2023, 8:30 PM
Ehrenhof
American artist Eliza Douglas will be presenting her first large-scale performance at the Kunstpalast on September 14th. Entitled EVERYTHING DIES, the work draws conceptually upon tropes of the horror and gothic genres as well as dark subcultures. Through minimalist, gestural movements and carefully-staged environments, Douglas examines both the subversive potential and simultaneous commodification of these elements. Having been a long-standing collaborator in Anne Imhof’s durational installations, Douglas’ work for Death and the Devil is conceived and directed by her own hand.
The performance will begin at 8:30 pm and is estimated to finish around 10 pm.

Whether lighter, leaf or lips, or heroin, heart or hands – as diverse as the motifs in Cornelius Völker’s (*1965) oeuvre are: the artist’s spirited and vividly coloured style of painting, often exploring familiar and everyday subjects shown in a new light, has always been characteristic of his work. Time and again, also objects generally deemed hardly worthy of painting find their way into Völker’s art.

In this first institutional retrospective staged in his home city of Düsseldorf, the Kunstpalast is showing 85 oil paintings and 50 works on paper from all phases of the artist’s caree
Nine exhibition chapters guide viewers through Völker’s oeuvre.

Cornelius Völker (*1965) studied at the Academy of Art Düsseldorf from 1989 to 1995. He lives and works in Düsseldorf.
In 2005 he was appointed Professor of Painting at the Academy of Art Münster.
Völker has developed a powerful style of figurative painting in which realism and a complex handling of colour combine to form a distinctive pictorial language. His paintings make familiar objects appear in a new light, bringing surprising facets to the fore with outstanding precision and inventiveness.

Alex Grein (*1983), winner of the Landsberg Prize 2022, explores the question of how images can persist in the digital age. In doing so, the Düsseldorf-based artist examines different categories of images and establishes a link between the virtual and the material.
The award, which was initiated jointly by the Düsseldorf entrepreneur Georg Landsberg and the Kunstpalast, is aimed at artists who graduated from the Academy of Art Düsseldorf several years ago.

The prize is aimed at graduates from the Academy of Art Düsseldorf, who left the academy a number of years ago. Sabrina Fritsch will be showing a selection of her latest paintings. The artist works with a form of abstract painting that picks up on and consolidates different traditional strands of 20th-century avantgarde art, moving them forward to new solutions. Fritsch expands the field of painting and demonstrates that through the art of formal reduction and concentration, crucial innovations may arise.

Exhibition
For the first time an art exhibition in Düsseldorf dedicated to photography sets out to unravel all of the medium’s many facets.
This is made possible by the Kunstpalast’s recent acquisition of more than 3,000 photographs. In the presentation of the new collection, avant-garde icons ranging from Man Ray through to Bernd and Hilla Becher are complemented by surprising, lesser known positions, while series of works are juxtaposed with individual pictures.
The exhibition comprising around 150 works presents a panorama ranging from the earliest techniques to the snapshot, elucidating a wealth of application contexts spanning the areas of press, publicity, science, through to fashion. The exhibition offers different thematic points of access to photography and illuminates the medium’s rich diversity.

Exhibition
A significant number of the approximately 100 paintings, drawings and sculptures will be presented to the public for the first time. The presentation, which also includes prints and arts and crafts objects based on motifs used by Kauffmann, brings back to life a time when the word went around that “the whole world is Angelica-mad”.
Angelika Kauffmann, according to J. G. Herder the “possibly most cultivated woman in Europe”, was a liberal-minded neoclassical artist highly acclaimed throughout Europe. Admired for her artistic talents, her broad education and impeccable character, Kauffmann enjoyed a career that, for female artists at the time, was unprecedented. She made a name for herself with her remarkable early works, received artistic training in Italy and came to fame and fortune in London as a history painter and portraitist. Later, the astute and well networked businesswoman opened one of the most sought-after studios in Rome.
The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Exhibition
Born in 1944 and raised in Duisburg, the German photographer spent two years working on an uncompromising collection of 140 photographs that will shed an unusual light on his colossal oeuvre, spanning from the early 1980’s to the present day.
The exhibition offers an extensive, first-hand look at images that are usually short-lived, being mostly commissioned by monthly fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, Rolling Stone or W Magazine. Lindbergh’s comprehension of fashion photography is that it can – and should – exist very well without putting fashion in the center. His images transcend their own context, becoming part of contemporary culture and photographic history. Untold Stories celebrates the legacy of Peter Lindbergh, who passed away in September 2019, while showcasing this master’s highly personal approach to fashion photography.

An exhibition of the Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, in cooperation with the Peter Lindbergh Studio and with further venues at Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt and MADRE in Naples.

Porsche-Project
On the occasion of the “70 years of Porsche sports cars” anniversary, a joint project between Porsche and Peter Lindbergh was created in 2018. At a beach in northern France, an iconic black-and-white picture series was created in 2018 with a historic 911 and the concept study “Mission E” – the model for the all-electric Porsche Taycan.
Even after this cooperation, the contact between Peter Lindbergh and Porsche was maintained; a special partnership has developed. Porsche Deutschland is the main sponsor of the exhibition “Untold Stories” by Peter Lindbergh and pays special tribute to this legacy. The pictures of the Lindbergh shooting will be exhibited together with behind-the-scenes pictures at Porsche on Sylt (Keitumer Landstraße 14, 25980 Sylt | Tinnum) from 22.6. – 1.10.2020.
